1. Introduction
From Velasquez to Victoria: European Art from 1650-1870
This 10 week course following ‘From The Colosseum to The Laughing Cavalier’ charts the history of art from the height of Habsburg Spain to the strict morality of Victorian England via the bloodlust of the French Revolution and the depictions of awe inspiring nature by the Romantics. In this course we will explore the historical, political and social contexts behind some of the most famous and dramatic artworks in the history of artworks in the history of art and delve into the heightening political sensibilities of artists such as Jacques-Louis David, Francisco Goya and Eugène Delacroix. We will travel from Hogarth’s London to the pinnacles of the Swiss Alps and delve into the changing nature of art, style and ideas. There will also be a practical session in this series where we learn to paint like the great British artist J.M.W Turner.
Katie Lintott is Head of History of Art at Surbiton High School. She studied at Warwick University; the Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, Venice; and the Courtauld Institute. Her particular interests include the Venetian Renaissance & the Spanish Golden Age; she also has a growing obsession with Masterchef.
The classes are open to everyone over the age of 16.
