io Saturnalia! io!

Today in Classics club we learned about and had our own celebrations in honour of the Roman winter festival, Saturnalia.

In many ways the equivalent of our Christmas, the Saturnalia was a riotous and joyous holiday where slaves were given some freedom, gambling was allowed and everyone wore bright clothing and a ‘freedom cap’. The main public events were a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn and a banquet at which slaves were served by their masters (they would still have prepared the food though).
