A Sonnet for Surbiton High


‘The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom.’1

Blossomed in 1884 for learning freedom

Eleven young girls began as courageous strangers

Sewed socks and patched shirts for the WWI soldiers

‘Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever.’2

Transformed to books and teachers’ thirsty endeavour

Sculptured by thirteen fierce bachelorettes save one.

Infuse young girls with resilient and passionate blood

For these sweet maids have been cherished till they are released

Warmed the same shadowy walls, and sung unchanged melodies

The 130 anniversary still burns our long remembrance
